Wachau, Austria

Classified as a Gebietswein or regional wine, the Grüner Veltliner Federspiel is only made from grapes carefully hand-harvested in the Wachau valley – a clear sign of its typical regional character. They are mainly grown on the characteristic humus-rich loam and gravelly soil in the Rossatz vineyards. It's a classic Federspiel, with concentrated fruit and gentle acidity.

Josef Fischer’s Wachau Grüner Veltliner Federspiel captures the precision and energy that make Austrian white wine so compelling. White pepper, pear, and citrus mingle with stony minerality and brisk acidity, delivering both refreshment and depth. Sourced from steep vineyard sites along the Danube, it balances ripeness with snap. For fans of Sauvignon Blanc or Chablis looking to branch out, this Grüner offers texture, intrigue, and serious dinner-table versatility.

Fischer's gleaming, penetratingly mineral Wachau-designated Grüner Veltliner Federspiel comes from three parcels along the Danube's southern banks, whose north-facing slopes produce wines of scintillating acidity and laser-like precision. This wine spends eight months on its lees in stainless steel following a spontaneous fermentation, and malolactic fermentation is never blocked.

The name of this grape, Gruner Veltliner can be translated in English language as "green wine of Veltin".Veltin was an area in the lower Alps during the 1600's that is now part of Valtellina, Italy! This a delicious Gruner from a 40 years old parcel. It's fermented spontaneously and aged on lees in stainless still tanks. The vineyards are on a steep slope not very far from the waters of the Danube river. The soil is sandy and granitic: it's an ideal environment for Gruner growing. On the nose you can notice mango, peach and citrus. On the palate you can enjoy yellow fruit , pear flavors with a long mineral finish supported by a gentle hint of sweetness.

Grüner Veltliner pairings:

Wiener Schnitzel (crispy breaded veal cutlet) or fresh seafood (like pan-seared trout). Iconic Austrian accents like sauerkraut, pickled radishes, or a light cucumber salad (Gurkensalat). Or classics such as fries with mayonnaise or salty rollmop.
